Search Engine Marketing (SEM) also known as Paid Search Marketing (Pay Per Click or PPC) is a performance based method of advertising in which advertisers pay for placement on page one of the search results for a targeted list of keywords. In a sense, the advertiser can buy targeted traffic. Advertisers only pay when a searcher clicks on their ad and is brought to their website. The cost per click is determined in an auction-like manner based on the competition for the keyword. Advertisers can set their budget in advance for a particular time period so that costs can be controlled.

Advantages of this approach include:

The disadvantages include:
